As a parent of a 12 year old, I had the fright of my life today. My son was visiting friends in Woodfieldside, and the three of them went to play in a nearby park. While they were there, a gang of boys approached them looking for trouble and asking if they wanted a fight. Then they noticed one of the gang was holding a kitchen knife! They ran to safety and the parents called the police. I felt sick when my son told me. We can't always be there to protect our kids from this kind of frightening encounter as they grow up, but we can't wrap them in cotton wool either.
This world is a scary place to live, isn't it?

Oh My God!! That must have been terrible for him, and you. I am so scared for my children when they grow up. I dont want to sound like my parents or grandparents but, what is happening in the world today? My daughter is 7 and she is nagging us constantly to play in the street with the other children. We live in a cul de sac with not much traffic really, but some of the children that play outside in the street in the past have beene as young as 4 or 5. In our street of late there has been a lot of problems with angry parents screaming and fighting in the road. I do not act like this in the home, and I do not want my daughter to see it in the street either. I really do worry what the local areas will be like when my children are too old to stay indoors or play in the garden. I do not want my children to grow up like sokme other children I see every day. It really does worry me.
