I have just noticed that along with the toilets in Blackwood being sold off in the High Street, also the public toilet oppposite Green's Fishing Tackle shop have been knocked down. Could somebody please tell me where is the best place to allow my son of 4 years old to go to the toilet while out walking? Or for that matter, myself or an elderly resident. If we were just to urinate where ever we needed to would we get a fine from the police, or should we all just mess ourselves? I have read the report the the council do not have to tend the toilets, as they do it for free. Well any public toilet that I have ever used in the Caerphilly Borough never looked like anyone took care of it anyway, so why close them. Would it not be a better idea to pay someone a wage to open, close and clean the toilets on a daily basis, rather than just close them.
Busting for an answer Phil

Funnily enough the assembly have an answer. Where are you supposed to take your small son to use the toilet? The pub, that's where. They are considering offering grants to pubs and garages to allow members of the public to use thier toilet facilities. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7284147.stmI for one do not want to use a pub's toilet and I think it is pretty awful that parents would have to take their children in to use them. I am amazed that the people of Oakdale supported their public toilet being torn down.

Hi Community Spirit, I know that they have tried this in Watchet in Somerset, but you and I feel the same way, I would not like to take my son into a public house to use the toilet. In Porthcawl they are very proud of their Public Toilet in the Town, and so they should be too. In Ystrad Mynach there is a public toilet, but you would have to pay 30p for the priviage, when they are staffed thaat is. Even the toilet in Caerphilly Town Centre is manned. Last month though we took our son to the castle, he need the toilet, but then when we got there we were told by council workers that they would be closed for the next hour as they were closed for cleaning, the result was our son was wet by the time we got to Morrisins.

Busting for an answer Phil Phil, I am a local opposition town cllr in Blackwood, so my comments must be taken with that in mind. Caerffili CBC cllrs decided last year in their wisdom to close 9 public toilets in the borough (8 in the former Islwyn side) in order to save approx £450,000 (a mix of maintenance and Disability Act upgrade requirements apparently). Blackwood's toilet billl came to £82k (approx £42k for maint. upgrading) the DDA requirements were not really needed as the bus station w/c's are disabled accesible (I contacted the Disability Rights Commisson). As far as I know, the site has not yet been sold as I convinced Blackwood town council to ask CCBC to hold off on the sale in order to look at the possiblity of running the facility themselves - it has gone a bit quiet on this front and I'll not know how this has panned out until after our meeting in the middle of April. I'll keep you posted Town Cllr Darren Jones
