BLACKWOOD UNDER 16S TOUR TO GALWAY
The Blackwood under 16s captained by Ethan Pritchard, enjoyed a very good tour to Southern Ireland, being based in Galway.
The 1st game insued a trip to Longford, which wasn't exactly what the doctor ordered after a sum what turbulent crossing of the Irish Sea in Severe Gales ! and when the bus arrived a deserted Longford ground an hour before kick off, the faces of everyone were dropping like stones, expecially for the supporters when the club house was all in darkness. Fortunately, the three stalwarts / supporters of the club turned up and the game went ahead. The home side used the stiff breeze in the 1st half and launched a number of high balls, but full-back Gavin Meacham, coped well. The home side looked strong, but half time came with them just leading by a solitary try.
The lead didn't last long, after the break, as Jeremy Roberts chased a chip ahead to score. The Blackwood pack had started to gain the upper hand, with solid work by the 2 Chrises, Turner, and Burton, and excellent work by Jordan March.
But they had to be disappointed when the side went to sleep after a Longford penalty hit the post and allowed the home side to score a converted try.
They responded with the try of the match, as an excellent back move, worked the over-lap for Ashley Edwards to score. Roberts converted to tie the game at 12-12, with the last kick of the match.
Game 2 saw a visit to the excellent Dewbury Park, home to the Athlone Buccaneers, and once again they had to face a strong west coast wind, in the first half.
If anything though, they were unlucky to find themselves 12-0 down at half time, with Nathan Hughes and Niall Price especially shining. They battled hard, in the 2nd half but couldn't breech the home defence until the last couple of minutes when Roberts scored his second try of the tour after an interception. He converted it to leave a final score of 12-7.
Even though the results didn't quite go Blackwood's way, the boys were a tremendous credit to their coaches and team manager Des Reynolds.
