SECONDS HELL
Due to the increasing backlog of fixtures this season, it is with great regret that the Pontllanfraith RFC 2nd XV will now have to drop out of the league for the 2007/2008 season. 2nd XV Captain Simon Deneen confirmed on Sunday that Pont will forfeit their remaining fixtures in the league. Disappointed 2nd XV team manager Chris Barlow said “We are now up to the point where we will have to play every weekend for the rest of the season just to finish the league games and with amount of 1st XV injuries and unavailable players it is unrealistic to think we will be able to field a team for each of these games.” On the reasons for the backlog he said “Well, the start of the season didn’t help at all. With so many 1st XV players out injured and regular 2nd XV player replacing them, it was hard to raise a side. Then we had a number of occasions where we had plenty of players but the games were called off due to factors outside our control like the weather or the ref not turning up. It’s hard to get players to come back once they’ve turned up a few times and there’s been no game for them.” He was more upbeat though on the future of the 2nd XV at Pont. “This means by no means is it the end of the 2nd XV at Pont” he said “We will still try to raise a side on a Saturday and if we have enough interest, we will go into the pool to look for games. So I urge all those players who still want to play to get up the Bryn on a Tuesday and Thursday or give me a call so keep this side going and have a good drink after the match on Saturday.”
