UWIC 15 - BLACKWOOD 15
A controversial finale marred this other wise entertaining game at Cyncoed.
A beautiful day was made for running rugby, but unfortunately for the visitors, the students played most of it in the first half.
Blackwood were finding it hard to control the game, and UWIC scrum half Josh Leach, was making the most of the good possession given by his pack.
The first try came after a line out and drive, flanker Mike Barber was at the bottom of it to score. UWIC extended their lead, with a carbon copy try with Barber making it a double. This time Simon Humberstone converted. He added a penalty to give a half time score of 15-0. The visitors were glad to see the break after a dreadful half, the only saving graces being a committed display by Kristan Perry, plus the pack were starting to win good turnover ball.
In the second half, the visitors showed how greatly their fitness has improved with a performance which was in complete contrast to the first.
Hooker Stuart Vokes showed the way, creating space frequently and the reward for one of these breaks was a try for Adam Coupe. Paul Emmanuelli converted. The introduction of Coaches Jeremy Lloyd, and Jason Rogers added impetus and Lloyd narrowed the gap with a penalty.
Vokes then had to show his versatility by filling in at scrum half after skipper Gavin Rees went off with an ankle injury. Coupe then equalised in the battle of the try scoring flankers, finishing off an excellent move inspired by Sean Emery.
At 15-15 both sides would have been happy with the draw, but referee Leighton Hodges dis-allowed what would have been a match winning try by Gareth Rusby-Davies. The knock on given enraged the visitors and Rogers was sent off for dissent. The game ended with the visiting supporters faces still going purple with rage.
