Have you read a good book lately? What's your favourite all time read? Put that novel down for a moment and tell us about it here.

Wow, everyone must be too busy reading The Local Info to leave any reviews!!
I have just finished reading TWO CARAVANS by Marina Lewycka. Initially attracted by the FSC friendly paper cover (well done to Penguin books for being green!) the book had received some great reviews. 'Outstanding' said the Daily Mail. 'Mad and hilarious' said the Daily Telegraph. 'A funny, rollicking road trip' claimed the Observer. TWO CARAVANS is the second novel by Lewycka and tells the sorry tale of a varied group of immigrant strawberry pickers in Kent. The book speaks from many of the characters voices, including a dog, but the cleverness lies in the difference of each voice, so there is never any confusion. A black comedy, very funny, sometimes shocking and at times it almost made me ashamed to be British! Lewycka writes with sharp observation and wit. Highly recommended. On the lookout for her first novel now, Short history of tractors in the Ukrainian. ;D

Sorry Larny, I saw the thread and did mean to contribute but was too busy reading! ;D I have that book - "Two Caravans" and it is on my bedside table - taking it's turn - I have a lot to get through! I love to re-read the classics and love all things Austen...I fell in love with Jane when I was a child brought about I am sure by my mother's enthusiasm for her (Austen's) writing. I read a lot and love autobiographies/biographies and of course as a (past) teacher of History I love to read all things historical..no, probably not all...not really into the Egyptians...but most things. I have recently completed reading "Bess of Hardwick" (First Lady of Chatsworth and married to the warden of Mary Queen of Scots). For total relaxation though I love a good crime thriller and yesterday completed "Written in Bone" by Simon Beckett. Good British crime writers are imho better than many of their American counterparts...I love Stephen Booth, John Macken and Phil Rickman and of course Ruth Rendall and PD James. Next on the list (to be started today) is Lisa Gardner's "Hide". This one is from the the US. Not into Romantic genre though .

Thanks, Mona!
If you're an avid reader and would like to buy your books at discount, I can highly recommend THE BOOK PEOPLE, a mail order company based in Bangor. When they say there's no small print and no club to join, they mean it. I have always found their service first class, and there's something for everyone, from classic collections to crafts and cookery. P & P is around £3.50 and you also earn redeemable points every time you shop.

For children's books, try RED HOUSE. Brand new books from favourite authors such as Garth Nix, Anthony Horowitz and Cornelia Funke. Very impressive selection of discounted books (average saving of 61%) for toddlers to teens. Again, great service, and no club to join, and even P&P is free. Lots of interesting snippets from authors, illusrators and readers included in each months issue. ;D
