Scared of spiders? Terrified by technology? Fearful of flying? Apparently, over 10% of the UK has some form of phobia, from ACHLUOPHOBIA (fear of darkness) to ZOOPHOBIA (fear of animals) and hundreds inbetween. Do you or someone you know have an irrational fear of something?

Yes I do and I can't even bring myself to type the word!! Or say it! It's been with me for years - since I was a child - even my children understand it and when watching tele shout to me -"don't come in mum you won't like what's on!"

I know exactly how you feel Mona! I also have a strange, but recognised phobia, and dislike even saying the word. Sometimes, it's hard to avoid as you say, it comes on tv which is unsettling. I even have to get my family to check through magazines and books for me in case there are any pictures! The times I've screamed and thrown a magazine across the room, scaring the living daylights out of people!
Anybody care to hazard a guess at my phobia? Sorry, there are no prizes on offer!

Hello there, guest, thanks for joining in!
Nope, not spiders. I quite like them - in fact we have a no killing of spiders policy in our house, and insist people put them outside if they are bothered! However both my sisters are terrified of them!
Try again! ;D

Yes Larny, books, newspapers and mags thrown across the room! Sounds very familiar - it's something that happens in this house too and I'm the culprit! Nope it's not spiders with me either - no harming policy too - although my daughter has a fear of them. I remember a little while ago a blood-curdling scream came from her room. We rushed up. I honestly thought there was an intruder and she was being harmed! She was crouched in the corner pointing at the ceiling...the tiniest spider was there minding his own business! We managed to get it out the window to the background call of "kill it kill it!!!" I won't hazard a guess at the phobia Larny in case it might be the same as mine and I can't type it and don't want to think about it!

Well, funny enough Mona, I wondered if yours may be the same as mine too?! Would you come across yours, for instance in a supermarket?
Tee hee, your story reminded me of something similar, years ago. My teenage sisters were home alone one evening, and my Dad came down the street to see neighbours out on their doors. As he approached our house, he could hear hysteria from inside. Expecting to find an intruder or the like, he realised the door was locked and he couldnt get in! Shouting for my sisters, they appeared distraught at the bedroom window, calling for help! It took another 20 minutes to persuade them to come downstairs and open the door, because they had to walk past the kitchen, where they claimed they had seen a huge tirantula like specimen. Imagine the row they had when it turned out to be nothing more sinister than a tomato stalk!! It still makes me laugh to this day, which I know is wrong because they really were scared!! Fear breeds fear, and they were feeding off one another!!
