Poor ol Tom Jones has received a slating from the press over his rendition of the National Anthem, at Joe's fight in Vegas!! How ironic that both the anthem and Tom himself, originated in Pontypridd, yet Tom rather embarrassingly, obviously struggled with the words (surely he realised beforehand, he didn't know them ). Can you put your hand on your heart and say you know the lyrics? Or even what they mean? I think all school children in Wales should be taught the Welsh anthem from a young age, like the Lord's Prayer. There are several translations, here's a general one.
THE LAND OF MY FATHERS The land of my fathers, the land of my choice, The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice; The land whose stern warriors were true to the core, While bleeding for freedom of yore.
Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales! While sea her wall, may naught befall To mar the old language of Wales.
Old mountainous Cambria, the Eden of bards, Each hill and each valley, excite my regards To the ears of her patriots how charming still seems The music that flows in her streams.
My country tho' crushed by a hostile array, The language of Cambria lives out to this day; The muse has eluded the traitors' foul knives, The harp of my country survives. [/center] Ahh! There's lovely! It was composed by father and son, Evan and James James in 1856. Glan Rhondda was the original name and it was first performed in the same year by a singer named Elisabeth John. By the 1870's it had a new name, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, and had become the most famous Welsh patriotic song. Following the Bangor National Eisteddfod in 1874, it was adopted as the Welsh national anthem.

Am I the only patriot on this ere forum then?
My all time fave Welsh hero is... TA TA TA TA TA TA TA TAH-DAH...
MIKE PETERS, frontman and rock legend of THE ALARM. I first saw them on one of the kids Saturday morning shows in the mid eighties, singing 68 GUNS. Big hair, big song, I was ten years old and smitten. I've been a fan ever since, had lots of their albums on vinyl back then. My good ol Dad took me to see the No Frontiers tour in St Davids Hall, Cardiff when I was about 15, (CHEERS DAD!) and although they split shortly after, I was lucky enough to see Mike Peters at Blackwood Miners' Institute a few years ago at an intimate, but fantastic gig. Family man Mike, from North Wales has twice beaten cancer and has since co-founded the love hope strength foundation. www.lovehopestrength.com. I still like to listen to the old stuff, (although on CD now!) and as an adult, the words have more poignancy today than ever. Mike came 11th in the top 100 Welsh hereos poll in 2004, which is great, but for me he's always been No.1. For sheer darn smiliness, we luv ya, Mike!
Any other fans out there want to share their views? C'mon, I know there are many, saw you at the concerts!
