BLACKWOOD 34 - BARGOED 16
Blackwood produced their best performance of the season to vanquish their neighbours at Glan-Yr-Afon Park.
The Blackwood pack laid an early marker, by taking a scrum against the head and refusing to back down to the heavy Bargoed pack. Jeremy Lloyd and Jamie Howells then exchanged penalties to open the scoring.
It was turning into the normal derby day war of attrition, but then the home side broke the deadlock, as Ian Jones set up Kristan Perry, to use his strength to break a tackle and score, Lloyd converted.
Bargoed came back sparked by scrum half Matthew Hutchings but they couldn't deny David James extending the lead, with a penalty. James got on the score sheet yet again producing an excellent arching run, to outspeed full back Jeremy Lovell, Lloyd converted.
Visiting Captain Lee Meades made the most of slack marking to pull a try back to give a 20-8 half time score.
Bargoed started the 2nd half the better and Howells narrowed the gap with another penalty.
The home side then went up a gear, and produced 2 tries from the top drawer. First Leigh Taylor, picked up from the base of the scrum linked with Ryan Lee, and Perry, skipper Gavin Rees finished the intricate move to score.
Then Luke Knight produced a classic outside break to split the defence, James finished it off for his 2nd try. Lloyd converted both.
Bargoed battled on and Lovell gained a consolation try to give a final score of 34-16.
As you can imagine the club house celebrations lasted well into the night, whilst Bargoed will look for revenge next Wednesday.
