CARDIFF DEMONS 20 - BLACKWOOD BULLDOGS 26
Blackwood Bulldogs opened their Welsh Conference Rugby League season with a durable victory over Cardiff Demons. Considering the Bulldogs had only 2 training sessions, and a stack of new players, they started well, with an early onslaught on their home line.
Gerwyn Price opened the scoring with a well taken try, and for good measure his brother Gareth doubled the lead, Jeremy Lloyd converted.
The St Peters outfit had no answer at this time and even though Kristan Perry had a try chopped off, for a foot in touch, another score had to come, and Gavin Bassett got it. Finally Cardiff uped their game and laid seige to the Blackwood line, but the defence held and only their frustration grew when home player Paul Cronnick and Paul Young were sin bined. Half time came with a score of
0-14.
The game seemed over when Bassett ran the length of the field for his second try, Lloyd converted. Unfortunately for the dogs, instead of killing the game with a few solid sets, a cavalier attitude ensued, and a few dropped passes allowed the Demons away back. Paul Bartlett gave them hope after the defence failed to deal with a high ball, but a solo effort from Byron Williams restored the gap.
At 4-26, with twenty minutes left, Blackwood should have been comfortable, but they tired, and Cardiff brought a higher level of productivity, to their game.
Graham Hughes and Andrew Bradshaw got tries, and along with a conversion by Shane Goddard, the Demons saw light at the end of the tunnel. The alarm bells were ringing, after Matt Morrisey scored in the corner, Goddard converted to bring the score to 20-26.
Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the whistle ended the game, but if they can produce more performances like the 1st half then they can look forward to a permanent future at the higher positions in the table. They now look forward to a home game against current champions Bridgend next Saturday - Kick off 2.30pm
